The purpose of this program is to provide supervision and training to residents to enhance their functional living skills and independence. All residents receive services on a daily basis through the implementation of a comprehensive individual service plan, with 24-hour supervision from staff.

For those individuals who are prepared for a semi-supervised living situation, the Supportive Apartment Program offers the individuals an opportunity to experience independent living in apartments located within the community. The purpose of the In-Home Respite Program is to assist families that care for a family member with a developmental disability to obtain respite services, in order to delay premature or inappropriate out of home placement, and preserve and strengthen the family unit. Respite is short-term, temporary care of family members with a disability to provide families relief from the demands of routine care of an individual with a disability. Respite can occur a few hours a day or week or for an occasional overnight. Respite care may be used so that families can pursue leisure and recreational activities, personal business, or take care of emergency situations. Respite care may not be used for "day care" while caregivers are at work.

Since 1970, this special program has been a learning bridge for children living in the Southern Tier. This year, over 180 children ages 5--21 shared in the joys of discovery experienced through the day program held at a local Binghamton City school. Day Habilitation Services are offered to residents living in Broome and Tioga Counties. These individuals have been diagnosed with mental retardation or another disability prior to their twenty-second birthday. Services are individualized and assist in developing, enhancing and/or maintaining skills which are typically used while working, living or socializing in the community. Volunteer opportunities are utilized as a means of increasing self-esteem, promoting individuality and independence. |
